Plot

In 1926, Newt Scamander arrives in New York by boat, carrying a mysterious suitcase that is home to dozens of magical creatures.
In the streets of New York, he comes across Mary Lou Barebone preaching about the existence of witches and other magical people. While Newt listens to Mary Lou, a Niffler, a small furry creature attracted to precious metals and gems, escapes from his suitcase and runs into a bank. Newt chases after it, causing mayhem everywhere and inadvertently dragging along a "No-Maj" named Jacob Kowalski, a World War I veteran and canning factory worker who is at the bank seeking a loan for a bakery. After retrieving the Niffler from the bank vault, Newt takes Jacob outside and prepares to obliviate him, but Jacob strikes him with the suitcase and escapes. Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein, a demoted auror, arrests Newt and takes him to Seraphina Picquery, the president of MACUSA (The Magical Congress of the United States of America), who dismisses them as unimportant.
Auror Percival Graves comes to Tina's office and demands to see what is in Newt's suitcase after Tina explains the situation to him. Upon opening it, Newt and Tina both are stunned to find pastries inside it, and Newt realizes he must have accidentally switched his suitcase with Jacob's. At his apartment, Jacob accidentally lets loose several of the magical creatures.
Meanwhile, Mary Lou is revealed to be running an orphanage of sorts, in which she indoctrinates the children with stories of evil witches and uses them to distribute anti-witch leaflets. Her youngest daughter, Modesty, proudly sings songs about dead witches, while her eldest son, Credence, is isolated and displays signs of discomfort with their professed ideology. Credence, unknown to Mary Lou, is approached several times by Graves, who has tasked him with finding a young child possessed by an Obscurus, whom Graves believes is connected to a number of unexplained, destructive magical incidents that have recently occurred in New York City. Graves has promised to rescue Credence from his troubled life and teach him magic if he succeeds.
Newt and Tina arrive at Jacob's place, where they find half his apartment blown up, and Jacob somewhat ill due to a bite from a Murtlap. Newt restores the apartment and Tina takes them to her home, where they meet Queenie, her younger sister who is skilled in Legilimency (mind-reading). Newt and Jacob are allowed to spend the night at their place, where Newt pulls Jacob into his suitcase, inside which Newt shows him his collection of magical beasts who are misunderstood by the world. While wandering through various environments within the suitcase, Jacob comes across a small dark entity, which Newt describes as an Obscurus, and urges Jacob not to touch it. Newt, after doing a count of missing beasts, leave the suitcase in order to find the first missing beast, an Erumpent, but Newt soon realizes his Niffler has once again escaped, and they recapture him at a jewelry store after a short struggle. They then come across several escaped ordinary animals including a lion and an ostrich, and they follow the trail back to the Central Park Zoo. Tina and Queenie soon realize that the two men are missing and Tina sets out to find them. She witnesses Newt and Jacob retrieving the Erumpent and heading back into Newt's suitcase. Determined to prove she's right to MACUSA, she locks the suitcase with Newt and Jacob inside and takes it with her back to MACUSA headquarters. Meanwhile, at MACUSA, many of the leaders have convened to address the dark force terrorizing New York City, which has resurfaced and killed a U.S. Senator. Tina shows President Picquery, Graves and a room full of important wizards what Newt has been up to. Picquery and Graves, however, arrest Newt, Tina and Jacob, and confiscate the suitcase.
Graves questions Newt about the presence of an Obscurus inside his suitcase. It is explained to be a dark force inadvertently created by young children who suppress their magic, out of fear of discovery or persecution by the non-magical community. A side effect of this magic is that the child hosts of Obscuruses, known as Obscurials, die before the age of 10. Newt had captured the Obscurus in his suitcase after it killed its Obscurial host, a young Sudanese girl. The child that Graves is seeking is in fact another unidentified Obscurial, who has continued wreaking havoc in the city and even killed United States Senator Henry Shaw, Jr. at a banquet. Graves sentences Newt and Tina to death, which is overheard by Queenie while reading Tina's mind. Newt uses one of his recently captured beasts, a Swooping Evil, to escape the Aurors, and together with Queenie, they retrieve Jacob and sneak out of MACUSA headquarters.
Meanwhile, Credence is shown to be growing more unstable due to his abusive home, and when he finds a wand underneath Modesty's bed, Mary Lou assumes that it is his and prepares to whip him with his belt, as she frequently does whenever he misbehaves. Modesty then confesses that the wand is hers, and when Mary Lou turns on her to whip her, the Obscurus appears, destroys the entire house, and seemingly kills everyone except for Credence and Modesty. Graves finds Credence later, and urges him to help him find Modesty, whom he believes to be the child from the prophecy. Newt, Tina, Jacob and Queenie visit a magical speakeasy to ask its goblin owner, Gnarlack, for information about the final missing beast, Dougal, a Demiguise who has the unfortunate power of being invisible. After Newt pretends to trade his Bowtruckle for information, Graves and his Aurors arrive at the nightclub, having been informed by Gnarlack about the foursome's presence there. Newt and his friends escape, and manage to track down Dougal, who is revealed to be caring for an escaped Occamy, a magical creature which can expand or shrink itself to fit any available space. Now having taken residence in the roof of Macy's, the Occamy has expanded itself to the size of a dragon. Newt, Tina and Jacob trick the Occamy into shrinking until it fits into a teapot and, relieved, Newt puts it back in his suitcase, now having retrieved all of the escaped magical beasts.
Graves and Credence track Modesty down to her old home where she used to live with her biological family. After cruelly rejecting Credence as a Squib and telling him that he was never going to help him escape his abusive life, Graves prepares himself to capture a terrified Modesty. However, Credence then reveals that he was the child possessed by the Obscurus all along. Fueled by his rage for Graves, Credence unleashes the full power of the Obscurus. Now incorporeal, Credence ravages the streets of New York, leaving chaos and destruction in his path. Newt, realizing that the lack of information Aurors have on Obscurials will lead them to kill Credence, sets out to find him. He tracks him down to an underground subway station, where he soothes Credence back into corporeal form. The arrivals of Graves and Tina cause Credence to shift back and forth between corporeal and non-corporeal state. When President Picquery and rest of the Aurors arrive, Picquery orders Credence's death in the interest of protecting magical secrecy. Despite protests from Newt, Tina and Graves, the Aurors kill Credence. Graves berates MACUSA for their actions and their obsessive need to preserve the thin veil of secrecy between the magical and non-magical world, which he claims has created situations like these and favors the interests of the non-magical community above the needs of wizards. Picquery orders Graves to hand over his wand and surrender himself. Graves battles the Aurors and seems to gain the upper hand until Newt overpowers and binds him using one of his creatures. Using the Revelio Charm, Graves is revealed to be Gellert Grindelwald, the most notorious Dark Wizard in the world. He is arrested and taken back to MACUSA. Newt, meanwhile, uses his Thunderbird to spread an amnesiac potion using the rain, wiping the memories of all No-majs who witnessed the magical havoc. Picquery orders them to wipe Jacob's memory as well, reminding them there are no exceptions, although she allows them to say goodbye. Queenie, who has grown fond of Jacob, kisses him before they leave.

A little while later, Newt changes Jacob's suitcase with a suitcase filled with silver Occamy eggshells to use as collateral for a bank loan for his bakery. Tina gets her old job as an Auror back, and she and Newt say their goodbyes at the harbor. Newt promises he will return once he has finished his book. Queenie visits Jacob's bakery, which is running extremely successfully especially due to the delicacies he makes inspired by the beasts he met but doesn't remember. The scene ends with Jacob appearing to faintly recognize her.

Arrival(2016)

Arrival is a 2016 American science fiction drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, based on the short story "Story of Your Life" by author Ted Chiang. The film stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg and Tzi Ma.
Arrival had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2016, and was released in the United States on November 11, 2016, in IMAX by Paramount Pictures. The film received critical acclaim, with its story, direction, and Amy Adams' performance receiving praise, and has grossed $28 million.

Plot

Twelve mysterious extraterrestrial spacecraft, nicknamed "Shells" by the U.S. military, touch down across Earth. Their purpose in arriving, as well as whether there is logic behind the specific landing sites, is unclear. Linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is selected to lead a special team created to enter one of the Shells which touched down in Montana, due to her skills in translationand her pre-existing Top Secret security clearance. Also on the team are theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), and US Army Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker). Louise is haunted by memories of her deceased daughter, with each memory serving a purpose in helping her decode the aliens' language.
After first contact with two cephalopod-like aliens, called Heptapods for their radial seven arm symmetry and whom Ian nicknames Abbott and Costello, they conclude that two-way communication in the aliens' spoken language is impossible. However, Louise and Ian discover they are able to communicate with them using their written language. The language proves to be extremely complicated, with all of the components of each circular symbol depending on each other. The complexity proves to be an issue when the aliens produce a message that translates to "offer weapon" in English and similar phrases in other languages. As each nation translates its version of the message, international forces scramble into action, as they believe it to be a threat. Louise believes that due to the language's complex structure, "weapon" could possibly have a double meaning, such as "tool", as if the aliens are trying to trade something.
Louise and Ian independently go into the Shell as soldiers are leaving and communicate with Abbott and Costello once more. Costello is able to guide Louise in writing one of their symbols on the barrier, and writes a complex sentence with hundreds of symbols. The two suddenly withdraw as a firefight breaks out below the Shell between a group of fearful soldiers and base security. A C4 explosive that was placed in the Shell by the soldiers explodes, but the aliens prevent Louise and Ian from being injured and they wake up in the base camp. The Shell rises higher into the sky, now inaccessible. When China makes preparations to destroy their Shell, the other international forces ready themselves to do the same out of fear of retaliation and the Montana base is ordered to evacuate.
Ian decodes that the complex sentence relates to the concept of time, and that what they received was only one twelfth of the intended whole. When General Shang (Tzi Ma) of China announces that the Chinese military will destroy their Shell, Louise rushes to the ship, which sends down a small shuttle that takes her back into the Shell. However, this time she is in their atmosphere. There she is greeted by Costello, who tells her that Abbott is dying. When Louise starts remembering her dead daughter, Costello tells her that she can see the future, revealing that all the visions of her daughter aren't flashbacks, but flash-forwards. The Heptapods' language structure allows for the speaker to be in all times at once—a strong extension of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis—instead of experiencing time linearly like most humans. Costello tells Louise that their purpose on Earth is to help humanity, by gifting their language and its supplemental abilities, so that in return, humanity can help them in 3000 years.
Louise returns to the camp and has another vision, of being at a party to commemorate 18 months since the events at the end of the film, where she receives thanks from General Shang for convincing him to change his mind about destroying the Shell in China. When she asks how she convinced him, Shang replies that she called him on his personal number and relayed a message. Confused, she says that she doesn't have his personal number, and Shang produces a phone with his number on it. Louise steals a satellite phone from the base and calls Shang using the number she received from him in the vision. While she is unsure of what to say if he answers in the present, Shang, in the vision, tells her that she convinced him by repeating his late wife's last words to him, which he repeats. Banks repeats the words to Shang in the present in Mandarin Chinese. She succeeds in changing his mind, and China's withdrawal convinces the other international forces to back down as well. The Shells all dematerialize into thin air, as China arranges to share all the information they had learned from their own shell with the world, and the rest of the nations follow suit.
When packing to leave the base, Ian admits his love for Louise. Another vision reveals Ian to be the father of her daughter. In her vision, Ian asks if they can have a child, and Louise enthusiastically replies "Yes."

Trolls is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical buddy comedy film based on the dolls of the same name created by Thomas Dam. The film was directed by Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger and based on a story by Erica Rivinoja. The film features the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden and Gwen Stefani. The film revolves around two trolls on a quest to save their village from destruction by the Bergens, creatures who devour trolls.
Produced as the 33rd animated feature film by DreamWorks Animation, the film premiered on October 8, 2016 at the BFI London Film Festival and was theatrically released in the United States on November 4, 2016 by 20th Century Fox. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed $177 million worldwide against its $125 million budget.

Plot

The Trolls are small creatures who live in an almost perpetual state of happiness, singing, dancing and hugging all day long. However, they are discovered by the Bergens, large creatures who never feel happy but discover that they can feel happy for a moment if they eat a Troll. The Bergens put the Trolls and their tree in a cage, and hold an annual festival in which each Bergen gets its feeling of happiness by eating a Troll. However, the Trolls, led by their King Peppy (Jeffrey Tambor), escape through underground tunnels on the day that the Bergen crown prince Gristle Jr. (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) would taste his first Troll. The furious Bergen King Gristle Sr. (John Cleese) banishes the Chef (Christine Baranski) who was in charge of the Troll preparation.
Twenty years later, King Peppy's daughter, the extremely happy and optimistic Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick), throws a big party to celebrate the Trolls' escape, despite the fears and warnings of the grey grumpy glum Troll Branch (Justin Timberlake) that loud parties will attract the Bergens. Branch's fears are realized when indeed the banished Bergen Chef sees the fireworks and captures a number of Trolls. Poppy is among the Trolls who managed to hide, but discovers that none of the other Trolls dare to venture to Bergen Town to rescue their friends. She goes by herself, but gets trapped by several spider-like creatures. She is saved by the reluctant Branch, and together they go to Bergen Town.
Poppy and Branch discover that their friends are being guarded by the scullery maid Bridget (Zooey Deschanel), and strike a deal with her: if she frees their friends, they will help her get a date with the now King Gristle Jr. While setting her up for the date, Branch reveals that he is the way he is because he ended up getting his grandmother killed after a Bergen found him because of his singing (which turned him from blue to grey).
Later, with the Trolls' advice (and hair), Bridget gets her date with Gristle and she helps the Trolls escape. However, things go wrong when Poppy and her friends try to rescue the last Troll, the Zen-like Troll Creek (Russell Brand) who after being apparently swallowed by the young king has been discovered being held captive in the jewel that decorates the king's mantle. While the Trolls are successful in stealing the jewel, they are dismayed to discover that it is empty and even more shocked by being captured immediately afterwards by Chef and discovering that Creek has betrayed them to save his own hide. Creek returns to the Troll village where using Poppy's cowbell he lures the other Trolls out of hiding, letting them be captured by Chef and the other Bergen cooks who lie in ambush.
With all the Trolls captured and being ready to be served to the Bergens, even Poppy loses hope and she and all the other Trolls turn grey. Branch, despite his grumbling, reveals to Poppy through song that he loves her and cannot stand seeing her and the other Trolls so despondent, allowing for Poppy and the other Trolls to regain their color and hope, and leading Branch himself to lose his grey hue and show his true blue color.
Just before being served, the Trolls are rescued by Bridget who wants them to flee while she herself is ready to accept the Bergen's punishment for her "treason". However, Poppy does not want to abandon her Bergen friend. Together with the other Trolls, Poppy reveals that Bridget was in fact the king's mysterious date, and that, for being happy, it is not necessary to eat Trolls as the feeling that Bridget and the King had on their date was happiness too. The Trolls invite the Bergens to sing and dance with them, making the grey creatures feel the happiness that was already inside them that they just needed help to access. The vengeful Chef, who sees her newly re-won position at court jeopardized, tries to kill the Trolls. Before she can do so, she is knocked into the serving cart by a well-aimed spoon thrown by Bridget. Together, with the traitor Creek who was still in her pouch, the Chef rolls out of the castle, with the cart set on fire.
In the end, the Trolls live in peace with the happy Bergens, Poppy is crowned their new queen, and with Branch regaining his blue color, they hug.
A mid-credits scene shows the serving cart with a burnt Chef and Creek on it stopping at the middle of. Chef tries to eat Creek until he stops her and they get eaten by a monster together.

The film was released in Australia on November 3, 2016 by Icon Film Distribution, and in the United States on November 4, 2016, by Summit Entertainment. The film received positive reviews and has grossed $20 million.

Plot

Desmond and Harold "Hal" Doss live up in the hills of Lynchburg, Virginia with their religious mother Bertha and father Tom, who is an abrasive hard-drinking man haunted by his World War I service and the subsequent loss of his childhood friends. One day, Desmond and Hal are play-fighting in the yard when Desmond picks up a nearby brick and strikes Hal in the head, rendering him unconscious. This traumatizing experience, along with a talk from his mother, firmly reinforces his belief in the Sixth Commandmentof the Old Testament. Years later, Desmond continues living with his family, and while at a hospital after dropping off a young man whose leg was lacerated under a car, he is instantly smitten with a nurse, Dorothy Schutte, and donates blood in order to strike a conversation with her. They soon begin dating and fall in love.
One night, Hal reveals that he has enlisted in the Army to fight in World War II, which greatly upsets his parents, especially his father. Hal's enlistment motivates Desmond to enlist as well. Because of his beliefs as a conscientious objector, he intends to serve as a medic. Before he leaves for training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he asks for Dorothy's hand in marriage, and she accepts. Doss is placed under the command of Sergeant Howell, and while he excels physically, he immediately becomes an outcast among his fellow soldiers when he refuses to handle his rifle nor train on Saturdays, as he is a Seventh-day Adventist. After Howell and the Captain, Jack Glover, fail to get Doss discharged for psychiatric reasons, Howell worsens Doss' conditions by putting him through grueling labor and turning his fellow soldiers against him by mistaking his beliefs for cowardice, intending to get Doss to leave of his own accord. Despite being beaten one night by his fellow soldiers, he refuses to disclose his attackers and continues training.
Doss' squad is temporarily released from training, and Doss intends to marry Dorothy, but he is arrested for insubordination for his refusal to carry a firearm. Dorothy visits Doss in jail, and tries to convince him to declare a guilty plea in his upcoming trial so that he can be released without charges, but Doss is still unsure, not wanting to compromise his beliefs. At his trial, Doss pleas not guilty, and before he is to be sentenced, his father barges into the courtroom with a letter from his former commanding officer stating that his son's refusal to carry a firearm is protected by the US Constitution. The charges against Doss are dropped, and he and Dorothy are promptly married.
Doss is sent to the Pacific theatre to participate in the Battle of Okinawa, where the Americans must climb the cliff face of the Maeda Escarpment, nicknamed "Hacksaw Ridge," to take on the Japanese forces stationed there. Doss meets with two other medics, who offer him advice for survival. After an artillery barrage, the soldiers engage in battle. Losses are heavy on both sides, and Doss is successful in saving several soldiers, including ones whose injuries appear too severe for them to survive. That night, Doss and a fellow soldier, Smitty, head out to find more wounded. While resting in a foxhole, Doss tells Smitty that he nearly shot his father after he held his pistol at his mother, revealing his aversion to holding a firearm. Smitty, in exchange, tells Doss about growing up in an orphanage after his mother abandoned him. He then tells Doss to get some sleep. During his brief dormant period, Doss immediately experiences a nightmare where he and Smitty are killed by surrounding Japanese soldiers. The next morning, the Americans are once again attacked by Japanese forces, which results in Smitty's death, forcing them to retreat while they launch another artillery attack. Doss refuses to leave, spending the entire day and night carrying wounded soldiers (both American and Japanese) to the cliff's edge and rappelling them down on rope, much to the shock and surprise of several men stationed below. The next morning, Doss barely manages to rescue a wounded Howell and himself from encroaching Japanese forces, and the two of them return to base, where he is hailed as a hero.
Despite the next day being Doss' Sabbath day, he joins his soldiers along with extra reinforcements, and with their help, they begin to win the battle. After a group of Japanese soldiers attempt a false surrender and ambush with grenades, Doss manages to repel two of them, the blast of the second one injuring his leg. The army defeats the Japanese forces while Doss is safely lowered down the cliff, clutching the Bible Dorothy left for him.

Pre-credit text reveals that Doss ended up rescuing over 75 soldiers at Hacksaw Ridge, and was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first time in history it was given to a conscientious objector. Doss stayed married to Dorothy until her death in 1991, and Desmond Doss died on March 23, 2006 at the age of 87.
